The 45th day of the
2012 WSOP unfolded on Tuesday, with 2,004 players returning to the Main Event tables for Day 2A and Day 2B. The players were the survivors of the first two day 1 flights and they did indeed play two simultaneous Day 2 flights. At the end of it all, the overall field had whittled down to 842. Gaelle Baumann of France was the one who managed to clinch the chip lead. She has managed to shoot past the 500k mark by a few thousand chips. Mark Demirdjian had an excellent day as well: he finished second overall with 499,990 chips.
The ‘name’ crowd yet again had a solid presence. Shaun Deeb finished high up among the leaders, as did Jason Somerville.
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu finished the day with a healthy stack too. Vanessa Selbst played well too: at the end of the day, she had 350.4k chips bagged.
Not everyone ran as well as the above mentioned crowd though. Some of the ‘name’ players made it past the hurdle on much smaller stacks. Jerry Yang, Pius Heinz, Peter Eastgate and Robert Varkonyi will all be back on day 3, albeit on stacks much smaller than they would probably have preferred.
Baumann emerged as a serious contender for the provisional chip lead quite late in the day. She happened upon a perfect hand situation with pocket rockets against an opponent’s pocket Ks and she took full advantage of it. A third A on the board cemented her hold on the hand and the K on the river could do nothing to help her opponent.
Gabe Kaplan had a pretty solid day as well. Although at one point his stack was above the 150k mark, he eventually finished with 141k chips to his name.
Scores of pros bit the dust: Tony Dunst, Isaac Haxton, Allen Cunningham, Erik Seidel, Justin Bonomo and Chad Brown were all eliminated.
