2013 WSOP Main Event – Greg Merson Falls on Day 5

239 players returned to the tables on the 5th day of the 2013 WSOP Main Event. Again, 5 two-hour levels went into the day, at the end of which only 68 were left standing. The player who finished the day with the largest stack was Sami Rustom, who had a little more than 7 million chips bagged at the end of the day.
Marc McLaughlin had a great day too: he finished second, with 6.69 million chips to his name. Jason Mann was another large-stack: he had 6.58 million chips bagged.
Maxx Coleman was the only other player who managed to climb over the 6 million chips mark.

Needless to say, the player who drew the most attention at the beginning of the day was reigning WSOP Main Event champion Greg Merson. Merson still held the hopes of a successful title defense alive, regardless of the extremely adverse odds. Unfortunately, those odds caught up with him today and he busted out. The one responsible for his elimination was Brett Richey. Merson took the initiative in his last hand by pushing all-in with an Ad, 2d before the flop. Richey made the call with a dominating As, Ks. The flop fell 3d, Kh, 2s. Both players caught a pair but Merson was still well behind Richey. The 9s fell on the turn. The 4s on the river gave Richey a flush and Merson was done. His elimination occurred in 167th place, so he picked up a $42.9k reward.

Carlos Mortensen is the only WSOP Main Event champ who remained in the running after Merson’s elimination.
Bob Bright busted out on the other hand, together with Michael Dietrich, Joshua Field and Greg Mueller. Roland Israelashvili and Vivek Rajkumar were among the victims of the day as well.
