2011 WSOP – Andre Akkari wins $1,500 NL Holdem Event

Day 29 of the 2011 WSOP made up for the relative bracelet drought of the previous day. Several events had been scheduled to play down to their bracelets on Day 28, but two of these wore forced over to day 29 on account of the hard-stop rule. One of these events was event #43, the $1,500 NL Holdem one. Only two players returned on the final day of action to battle it out for the title: PokerStars pro Andre Akkari and Nachman Berlin.

Akkari had a more than decent lead of 9.4 million chips to Berlin’s 3.4 million. A true red-blooded poker pro, Akkari didn’t rush things despite his chip advantage. Instead of trying to force his opponent to commit early on, he took things slowly, looking for spots to pick up more chips from his opponent while keeping up a perpetual yet subtle pressure.
Berlin chipped up some before a crucial hand occurred which gave Akkari his first double-up. Berlin was the one who made the first move in that hand, shoving all-in preflop while holding a K,Qo. Akkari made the call holding A,8. The flop fell A,8,3 hitting Akkari’s hand dead on. The turn and the river did not help Berlin and Akkari made a huge step towards the bracelet. Berlin then began to work his way up again and at one point he nearly managed to make up for the losses he incurred in the above said hand. He then decided to gamble a little though, but Akkari was having none of that.
Berlin made a big preflop raise, in response to which Akkari shoved all-in. After a little bit of hesitation, Berlin made the call and showed A,10o. Akkari had pocket Ks which held up to give the Brazilian a huge lead.

In the final hand of the event, Berlin got his last chips into the middle on an Ad, 8d. Akkari made the call with K,J and caught a king right on the flop. The second K on the turn sealed the deal for good and the Brazilian picked up $675k for his efforts.
