2011 WSOP – Daniel Idema Wins $10k Limit Holdem World Championship Event

18 players returned to the tables on the 3rd day of the $10k Limit Holdem World Championship Event with a clear goal in mind: to play down to the bracelet. Given the daunting size of the buy-in, the field was a rather select one. When the official 9-handed final table was reached,Z Daniel Idema had the largest stack. That fact hardly represented a guarantee of any sort though, given that players like Justin Smith,
PokerStars’ Barry Greenstein, Nick Shulman and Isaac Haxton (who plays online at PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker) also made the final stretch.
Barry Greenstein was definitely a top candidate for the title. He’s already scored 3
WSOP bracelets, but none of them in a Holdem Event. This wouldn’t be his day either. Though he turned in a brilliant effort, he fell short yet again, fading away in 3rd place. He shoved all-in on a Q,10o, against Matthew Gallin’s 10s, 5s. The board was extremely stingy with both players, but the river did bring a 5 to give Gallin a measly low pair, spelling the end of Greenstein’s tournament life.
Despite the elimination he scored, Gallin started the heads-up stage with 4-1 chip handicap. The home dash was a relatively straightforward affair: Gallin got crippled first, his pocket 8s bested by Idema’s A,9o on the flop. He then pushed the remainder of his chips into the middle, holding pocket Qs. The flop read J,7,3 and Idema had J,3 for the two pair.
The 8c on the turn and the 5d on the river sealed the deal for good, handing Idema the title and sending Gallin to the payout booth in second.
Idema picked up $375k for his efforts. The interesting thing about this event was that Idema finished second in it last year. This time, he got it right and went all the way to secure the bling.
