2011 WSOP – Day 22 Wrap-Up

Besides the bracelet-awarding $1k NL Holdem tournament, 3 more events rolled on, on the 22nd day of the 2011 WSOP.
Event #35, the $5k PLO Six-handed Event, saw its second day kick off with 105 players returning to its tables. Making it past the money bubble was the first order of the day, but playing down all the way to the final table was in the books as well. The first objective was reached when Matthew Ezrol busted out on the bubble. The second objective fell out of reach though. After 10 levels of play, 15 players remained in contention, with Gregory Brooks leading the pack. PokerStars’ Jason Mercier, David Chiu, Devilfish Poker’s Dave Ulliott and Mike McDonald also survived.

Event #36, the $2,500 NL Holdem one, was the first one that kicked off on day 22. 1,734 players registered for it, among them a whole bunch of pros. Brandon Cantu, Tom Marchese, Jason Somerville, Eddy Sabat, Jonathan Duhamel, Dwyte Pilgrim and Barny Boatman were all there. Marvin Rettenmaier clinched the chip lead at the end of the day, bagging 174k chips. Dwyte Pilgrim finished with a healthy stack as well.

Event #37, the $10k HORSE Championship Event, kicked off as well. 240 of poker’s best players bellied up to the tables, among them Jennifer Harman, John Cernuto, Michael Mizrachi, John Juanda and Daniel Negreanu. Bill Chen, David Benyamine and Jerry Buss played too. Given the hefty size of the buy-in, it is safe to say that the overall quality of the starting field was much superior to what other – smaller buy-in – events usually feature.
After a full day of green felt hostilities, 173 players remained in action. Ron Ware clinched the chip lead. “Name” players to make the top 10 were Eugene Katchalov, Daniel Negreanu, Chris Tryba and Barry Greenstein.

The $5k PLO event is pretty much set to award a bracelet on Day 23. Both of the above covered upstarts are bound to reach their money bubbles too.
