2011 WSOP – Day 24 Wrap-Up

Besides the two events which were supposed to play down to a winner but failed, Day 24 of the 2011 WSOP hosted two events which had begun a day earlier. A new event got going as well. Event #38, the $1,500 NL Holdem Event, which had drawn a massive starting field on the previous day, saw 298 players return to action on its second day. By the time the day 2 hostilities ended, only 23 remained.
The field worked its way right past the money bubble on day 2. 216 players finished in the money. Sam Trickett, Justin Smith, Bryan Devonshire and Shawn Busse were all eliminated on day 2, but they all fell within the money, so they will at least have something to show for their efforts.
Melanie Weisner was among the 23 who survived the second day of action. On Day 3, she will be looking to become the 5th woman to make a final table this year. If she goes on to win, she’ll be only the second woman after Vanessa Selbst to win a bracelet in an open event.

Event #39, the $2,500 PLO/Holdem event, saw 131 players return to its tables. The first goal of the day was to play down past the money bubble and sure enough, that goal was fulfilled when Greg Lee put the last of his chips into the middle against David Williams. They both made a two pair, but Williams’ was better and the field sat back, relieved to have made the money. 22 players remained in the books at the end of the day. The largest stack belonged to David Lestock.

Event #40, the $5k NL Holdem six-handed one, got going on Day 24 with an impressive 732 players coughing up the buy-in. The turn-out represented a major increase of about 164 players over last year’s numbers. The field was as star-studded as they come. PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu registered for this event, together with Phil Hellmuth, Shaun Deeb, and Eugene Todd. Matt Jarvis finished in the lead, followed by Randy Dorfman. Negreanu is currently 5th and Hellmuth has finished with a healthy stack as well.
