Day 35 of the 2011
WSOP was supposed to be an off day, an opportunity for players to take a well-deserved break while celebrating the 4th of July and taking in the spectacle of fireworks in the sky above Las Vegas. For some though, day 35 was just another day of grinding and hoping for the next money-bubble, final table and bracelet.
The $1k NL Holdem event’s second day saw 638 players belly up to the tables. The goal was to play down past the money bubble, and that goal was indeed reached, in just over a level of action. Angel Guillen, Terrence Chan, Shane Schleger and ex-
PokerStars pro Greg Raymer all finished in the money. The bad news for all them was that they would not be able to return for day 3.
45 players remained at the end of the day, with Anibal Andres holding the largest stack.
The $50k Players’ Championship rolled on undisturbed by the celebrations and fireworks too. 74 players returned to the tables. Ben Lamb had the largest stack at the beginning of the day, but when the action got called, we were treated to some déjà-vu: Phil Hellmuth surfaced as the overnight chip leader, once again threatening to add #12 to his collection, thus doubtlessly unleashing hell and brimstone on the poker world though the over-inflation of his already considerable ego.
Given the pro-heavy nature of the field, the casualty list for the day was a truly impressive one too. John Racener and Shawn Buchannan bit the dust, together with Jennifer Harman, Matt Hawrilenko, Betrand Grospellier and Eugene Katchalov.
Gus Hansen played well through much of the day, although he too slipped a bit towards its end.
John Arieh was the one who clinched the chip lead at the end of the day. Brian Rast and Vladimir Shchmelev rounded out the top 3.
29 players were left in contention, but with the money bubble set for 16th place, a few players will still go home empty-handed.
