2011 WSOP – Day 36 Wrap-Up

Day 36 of the 2011 WSOP did not award any bracelets, but there was plenty of action nonetheless. The $50k Players’ Championship event played down to its unofficial final table. Phil Hellmuth – although a sure mark for the bust at one point – managed to survive and to even build up a decent stack heading into the final leg of the tournament.
The $1k NL Holdem event (#54) also managed to hit the final table. Team
PokerStars pro Maxim Lykov led the field in that one.
Two fresh events kicked off: the $1.5k NL Holdem event (#56) and the $5k PLO Hi/Lo Split event (#57). These two events will wrap up the
2011 WSOP as far as side events are concerned.
The $1.5k NL Holdem Event drew a starting field of 3,389 players. Some of these guys were eager to grab the last reasonably-priced chance at NL Holdem WSOP glory, while others were probably just looking to get in some practice before the Big Dance. The generously-sized starting field created a generous prize-pool too: the eventual winner of the event will walk away with a $777.9k prize.
10 levels were played on day 1 and when the day was called, 465 players were still in contention. With the money bubble set for 342nd place, that means a good number of participants will still head home empty-handed.
Benjamin Volpe finished the day with the largest stack. Dan Kelly and Brandon Myers made the top 10 as well.
The $5k PLO hi/lo split event saw 352 players belly up to its tables. While not particularly impressive when compared with cheaper NL Holdem event starting fields, registration soared past last year’s record set by the same event.
189 players remained in contention at the end of the day, among them Alexandre Gomes, Max Pescatori, Dan Shak and Joe Tehan. All these ‘name’ players finished with more than decent stacks. Allen Kessler and Erik Seidel survived too, albeit on lesser stacks.
