Wednesday marked the second day of the $25k NL Holdem Heads-up Event of the
2011 WSOP. 32 players returned with hopes of clinching the much–coveted bling, together with a handsome first prize to reward them for their efforts. With the money bubble set for 16th place though, it was clear that half the remaining field would still end up with nothing to show at the end of it all.
The first one to dispose of his opponent and to move into the money was John Duthie. In the final hand of his match against Carlos Mortensen, Duthie picked up a pair of Qs and got his chips into the middle on them. Mortensen had pocket deuces and the board failed to change the preflop state of affairs, giving Duthie a ride into the money. Anthony Guetti disposed of David Benyamine next to move on to the sweet 16.
Jake Cody, Tom Dwan, Nikolai Evdakov and Yevgeniy Timoshenko managed to advance one by one too.
Eric Froehlich then bounced John Duthie to advance to the final 8. Tom Dwan was unlucky enough to face Gus Hansen in the next round, in a battle of the
Full Tilt Poker pros, but early in their match, it looked like the New Jersey Wonderkid would brush off the Great Dane’s challenge without problems. Hansen, who appeared to be in a great shape throughout the other rounds, managed to bounce back though, and he turned the tables on Dwan, advancing to the final 8. He was soon joined by Jake Cody, Timoshenko and Evdakov.
The third day of action saw Hansen square off against Matt Marafioti. Sure enough, the Great Dane’s luck held and he scored another win to make it to the final 4. Froehlich disposed of Evdakov and Jake Cody got the better of Anthony Guetti. Joining these guys on day 4 will be Yevegeniy Timoshenko, who fought his way past David Paredes.
