Day 19 of the
2011 WSOP was supposed to award 2 gold bracelets. Eventually though, it only made one player’s day and that player was Andy Frankenberger, winner of the $1,500 NL Holdem event.
28 players made their way back to the tables on day 3 of the event to play down to the final table. It only took the field about 2 hours to make the final table and when that stage was reached it looked like
PokerStars’ Steven Merrifield would steamroll the rest of the table: he had built up a stack 1 million chips bigger than that of second place man Andrew Frankenberger.
Unfortunately for Merrifield, Lady Luck left his as soon as the final table action kicked off. He dropped most of his chips and he was soon all-in, holding an open ended straight draw with a pair against an opponent’s nut straight. He was bounced in 6th place.
By the time the heads-up stage was reached, only Andy Frankenberger and Joshua Evans were left.
Evans had a decent chip lead when the home dash began, and he proceeded to expand his lead, building up a 2-1 advantage at one point. From there on out though, it was Frankenberger’s turn. The tipping point in the bout came at the end of a hand which saw Frankenberger’s A,K triumph over Evans’ A,10o, to give the stock-broker a timely double up. Frankenberger then proceeded to build a 3-1 chip advantage before the final hand of the event came about.
The last flare-up occurred on a flop of 5d, 7h, Jh, when Evans decided to get his remaining chips into the middle. It turned out he had Jd,10d for the top pair. Frankenberger made the call with J,7o though. The 3h and the 2c which fell on the turn and the river respectively failed to alter the situation and Frankenberger picked up $599k to go with his first ever WSOP bracelet.
