2011 WSOP – Jason Somerville wins $1k NL Holdem Event

The second of the $1k NL Holdem events is in the books, and Jason Somerville is the one whose wrist currently holds the prized bling. No fewer than 3
WSOP bracelets were awarded on Day 14 of the 2011 Series. The first of them ended up in Foster Hays’ possession, while the third one went to
PokerStars pro Bertrand Grospellier.
27 players returned on Day 3 of the $1k NL Holdem event, looking to first play down to the final table and then all the way to the bracelet. It took the field about three levels to make the final table. Alexander Martin was the one who managed to build up the largest stack by that stage. Somerville had started the day with the largest stack, and he managed to keep it at a healthy level all the way to the final table, which he entered 3rd in chips. Diana Allen also made the final table, becoming the 3rd woman this year to make a WSOP final table.
She did well during the final stretch of action too, and at one point she even looked like she was going to clinch the lead, but she eventually faded away and she was bounced in 7th place.
Somerville played well too, but unlike Allen, he never went away. He kept building his stack, so when the heads-up stage started, he had a pretty decent lead over Yashar Darian.
The heads-up stage of this event was quite probably one of the most interesting home stretches of any 2011 WSOP event thus far: it lasted exactly one hand. The two players decided to get aggressive on the very first hand and they got into a preflop raising war which ended up pot-committing Darian. He had a K,4o though only against Somerville’s pocket rockets and the confrontation was over before it began.
Somerville picked up $493k for his efforts.
