The second bracelet of the 16th day of the
2011 WSOP went to John Monnette, winner of the $2,500 8-Game Mix event.
25 players returned to the tables on the 3rd day of the tournament to play down to the final table first and then to the bracelet. That objective had indeed been fulfilled when John Monnette posed for the winner’s mug-shot, bracelet in hand and a huge bunch of chips piled up in front of him.
There were plenty of high-profile contestants still in contention when the final day of the event kicked off, and many of them made it through to the final table. As the unofficial 9-handed final table was reached,
Full Tilt Poker’s Eric Buchman was the one sitting behind the largest stack. He managed to hoist his stack above the 1 million chip mark. Monnette was well-positioned too, his stack a respectable 745k big.
Adam Geyser’s elimination in 9th place set up the official final table. Geyser got all his chips into the middle in an Omaha hand, and Monnette proceeded to hit a nut flush against him on the river to send him to the rail.
When the official final table got rolling, John Juanda and John Racener were in contention as well. Eventually, it came down to the battle of the large stacks as Buchman faced Monnette heads-up for the title.
Monnette was the one who rolled into the heads-up stage with the larger stack: he had 2,85m against Buchman’s 715k.
Monnette took full advantage of his favorable position and the pressure he so skillfully exerted soon yielded dividends: Buchman found himself with just 203k chips and he decided to put his tourney life onto the line. In a Stud-8 round, he got it all-in in the 4th street, holding Qc,2c,10c,Js. Monnette made the call with 3d,2d,Ah,Jc. 5th street gave Monnette a pair of Js and that was enough to put him out in front for good. Neither the 6th nor the 7th street helped his opponent.
Monnette picked up $278k to go with his bling.
