David Bach may have had one hell of a ride on day 5 of the
2011 WSOP Main Event, but his lead over second place man Pius Heinz was still only a meager one at the end of the day. Bach finished with a stack of 4,706,000 chips. Heinz was breathing down his neck with 4,699,000. Third place man Kyle Johnson wasn’t far off the pace either: he finished with 4,654,000 chips.
Much of Heinz’s progress for the day came at Jon Friedberg’s expense. The two players locked horns over a board of Qs,8d,6c,5c. Heinz had pocket Qs for the set, so he made the call without any problems. Friedberg had a top pair top-kicker with his A,Q, and he was pretty much done. This hand took Heinz’s stack to 3.77 million. He didn’t stop there though. He continued chipping up and by the end of the day, he was within 7k chips of the leader.
Kyle Johnson’s rise through the ranks was an even quieter one. He had a pretty substantial stack of 1.76 million chips at the beginning of the day and he started working quietly in the background to add to it several times early on. His efforts paid off handsomely, and by the end of the day, he was among the front-runners.
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu had a pretty bad day. He struggled to gain traction and every time he looked like he finally managed to get something going, he hit a snag and sunk back into the field. He got the last of his chips in on pocket 10s against Rupert Elder’s A,7o. The flop was all good for the Canadian, but the A which fell on the turn was his death-knell.
Star of the day chip leader Manoj Viswanathan went from hero to zero during day 5. His tournament life ended on a QQ vs AA match-up, which saw the last of his chips shipped over to David Barter’s stack.
Ben Lamb played well again, and he finished 5th overall.
