The third bracelet awarded on Day 33 of the 2011 WSOP went to Matt Matros, the winner of the $2.5k Mixed Holdem event. The final day of the tournament saw only the final table reconvene, with the goal of playing down to a winner. Brandon Meyers was the one who started the final stretch with a huge chip lead: he had a 2-1 advantage over second-place man Noah Boeken. Matros was looking for his second career bracelet, together with
PokerStars regular Matt Hawrilenko, who had also tasted
WSOP victory before.
Noah Boeken was one of the early victims of the final table. He took a couple of hits and found himself in a position to shove all-in on a K,Qo. Hawrilenko was the one who made the call holding A,Q. the K which fell on the flop gave Boeken the early lead, but Hawrilenko hit a straight on the river to send him packing after all.
Hawrilenko rode the momentum of that elimination all the way into 3rd place, where eventual winner Matt Matros disposed of him. Hawrilenko got his last chips into the middle well: on a flop of Qh, Jd, 6d, he had a Q,Jo for the two pair. Matros made the call with Kd, 2d looking to land a K-high diamond flush. The 5d on the turn filled his flush and the heads-up stage of the event was set.
Jonathan Lane was the one who joined Matros heads-up. Lane had but 1.1 million chips to Matros’ 3.2 million though. He managed to pull off a rather spectacular comeback, and for a few hands, he even took the chip lead. Matros bounced back with a vengeance though and turned the balance back into his favor.
The final hand of the event saw Matros’ A,10 go up against Lane’s J,10. The board blanked out and Matros picked up his second WSOP bling.
He also pocketed $303k to go with his bracelet.
