2011 WSOP – Soulier, Schock Strike Gold

The final day of the $10k HORSE World Championship Event (#37) was to be an extremely short one: only two players returned to decide the fate of the title: PokerStars’ Fabrice Soulier and Shawn Buchannan. Soulier had a massive chip lead when the action commenced and it didn’t take long till Buchannan was forced to put his tournament life onto the line.
It was in an Omaha hi/lo round that Buchannan effectively chip-committed himself by calling a preflop raise. The flop came 10,8,4 rainbow, and after a couple more raises and calls, Buchannan was all-in. He had J,J,10,7 for the pair and the straight draw. Soulier had Q,J,8,6 for the low draw, a better straight draw than Buchannan and a middle pair.
An Ad fell on turn and a 6 on the river which gave Soulier a two pair, effectively sealing the fate of the title.
Soulier picked up $609k for his efforts.

The third bracelet of the day came in event #39, the $2,500 PLO/Holdem one. 22 players showed up on the final day of this event. Tyler Patterson had a massive chip lead, but Mitch Schock came into the day on a healthy stack as well. With 5 players remaining, Schock found himself one of the short-stacks. It was then that he managed to turn the whole thing around, and within the span of a couple of hands, he went from near-zero to hero, building up a massive chip lead.
His first double-up came at Carter Gil’s expense. He then went on to bounce none other than Patterson, on a two pair vs top pair match-up. That move pushed his stack to 2.52 million chips and put him into prime position to finish off the 3 remaining players.

When things boiled down to the heads-up stage, Schock faced Rodney Brown. Brown had a pretty serious handicap to begin with, but he vaulted right back into contention and took a 3-1 chip lead at one point.
Then, it was Schock’s turn to bounce back. The final hand of the tournament saw Schock’s flush best Brown’s draws in a PLO round for the win. Schock picked up $310k for his efforts.
