The second day of the 2012 EPT Barcelona Super High Roller had quite a lofty objective: playing down to the final table. At the end of eight levels of action, that objective was indeed achieved at the end of the day. Dan Smith was the player who managed to amass the most chips going into the final stretch of the event: he leads the final table with a stack of 5.1 million chips.
Smith’s superiority on Day 2 was undeniable. He had Lady Luck’s full support too, as the very hand which handed him his huge lead came at the end of a lucky board: he and Simon Ravnsbaek both got all their chips into the middle with A,Ko. Smith happened to hold the As and the board quickly ran out four more spades to give him the nut flush and the massive chip-up.
Several of the players who busted out on Day 1 had promised to re-buy and indeed, at the start of Day 2, six of them were waiting buy-in in hand to re-join the action.
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu was among them, together with Phil Ivey, Sorel Mizzi, Philipp Gruissem and Jonathan Duhamel. When the line was drawn after the last buy-in went into the middle, the prize-pool amounted to €3,072,960. This means that the winner will pick up a €1,075,500 haul.
The first victim of day 2 was online sensation Terje Augdal. Cheung Yin Sun followed him to the rail.
Many of those who had re-bought were eliminated. Negreanu was sent home together with Sorel Mizzi, Jonathan Duhamel and Phil Ivey. The elimination was an especially painful one for Duhamel, who had bought in no fewer than 3 times, sinking a total of €150k into the event.
Mike McDonald was among the survivors of day 2. His stack of 4.6 million chips gave him second place going into the final table. Other players who made it were Erik Seidel, JC Alvarado, Ilari Sahamies and Mike Watson.
