2012 WSOP – Day 23 Report

Monday was a truly busy day at the 2012 WSOP: 6 events rolled on, of which 3 managed to play down to their respective winners. One of the winners was Allyn Jaffrey Schulman, who became only the second woman since 2008 to take down a WSOP bracelet in an event which didn’t feature a ladies only requirement. The other winner was Carter Philips and the third one was David Baker.
The $1k Seniors’ NL Holdem event was the scene of Allyn Jaffrey Schulman’s victory. Only 4 players returned at the beginning of the day: Dennis Phillips, the chip leader, Allyn Jaffrey Schulman, Bob Phelps and Hoyt Corkins.
Corkins was the first one to bite the dust, bounced by Phelps in 4th place. He was rewarded with $199k for his efforts. Phelps was the one eliminated in 3rd: he picked up $270k after his pocket 6s fell to Schulman’s pocket Qs.
At the start of the heads-up stage of the action, Schulman enjoyed a 4-1 chip lead over Dennis Phillips. Phillips eventually battled back until they were pretty much even, but then he lost a major pot on a hand which saw him come within a couple of cards of the title. In the final hand of the event, Schulman’s A,10o got the better of Phillips’ A,6o for the win. The winner’s share of the spoils was a massive $603.7k. Phillips had to settle for $372.8k.

Event #31, the $1.5k NL Holdem one, saw Carter Philips take the bracelet and the $664.1k top prize. Phillips bested Joe Cada heads-up on his way to the title. Cada’s reward wasn’t a shabby one either: he picked up $412k for his efforts.

The $10k HORSE event was the one responsible for the third bracelet of the day. Plenty of ‘name’ players saw action on the final day of this event: Phil Ivey was there, together with Phil Hellmuth and John Monnette. Ivey eventually finished 5th, Hellmuth 4th and Monnette ended up in second, picking up $279k. The winner, David Baker, took down $451.7k.
