2013 PCA Action – A Look at the Side-Events

With all the attention focused on high-profile events like the $100k Super High Roller and the $10k Main Event, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that the 2013 PCA is in fact a 10-day poker festival, hosting a staggering 41 poker tournaments. Last year, the winner of the Main Event was John Dibella, an amateur poker player from New York, who took down a $1.7 million prize for his efforts. Critics were quick to pounce on him and to denounce him as a one-hit wonder. Well, those same critics got silenced for good the other day, when Dibella returned to the PCA’s winners’ circle. His win came in event #3, the $2k NL Holdem Turbo event.
Dibella’s path to victory led through a field of 109 players, who had generated a prize-pool of $211.4k. The winner’s cut of the pool was a $69.7k slice, and more importantly, the bragging rights. Dibella bested Charles Yamaguchi of Brazil heads-up for the title. The field Dibella had to best to get to the top wasn’t a shabby one either. Joe Elpayaa finished 4th in the tournament, picking up $17.9k for his efforts. This haul added to his lifetime tournament achievements, Dibella managed to move his all-time tournament winnings past the $2 million mark.

Event #4, the $300 NL Holdem Turbo one, saw another American rise to the top. Aleksey Afanasyev bested Stephen Thompson of Canada in this one, to take down the $13.4k top prize. There weren’t any high profile players finishing in the top 10 of this event.
Event #7 on the other hand, the $5.2k NL Holdem Turbo 8-Handed tournament, saw quite a battle at the top: eventually, Michael Telker of the US defeated PokerStars’ Johnny Lodden heads-up for the win.
