2013 PCA High Roller – Day 1 Report

The first day of the PCA’s $25,000 high roller saw 198 players belly up to the tables. The initial turnout was truly impressive indeed and it may yet get higher given the fact that registration is open until the beginning of Day 2. Last year, only 148 players coughed up the buy-in for the same event, which means that this year's turnout has indeed managed to exceed the expectations of the organizers.
11 levels of action went into the first day, at the end of which Vladimir Troyanovsky emerged as the chip leader.
Troyanovsky’s path through the day wasn't a particularly outstanding one. He just did his job and kept chipping up all the time, peppering an otherwise smooth run with a larger pot here and there.
One such pot was the one he took off of
PokerStars Pro Ville Wahlbeck. The money went into the middle on the turn of a board which saw a four card straight and a three card flush on the table. Although Wahlbeck had the straight, Troyanovsky came from behind to hit a flush on the river and to take down the pot. Later in the day, Troyanovsky hit another flush to chip up significantly yet again.
Needless to say, scores of high-profile pros took part in the
poker tournament. Of them, many bit the dust on day one.
Faraz Jaka was among those eliminated, together with Antonio Esfandiari and Joseph Cheong. Eugene Katchalov and Jonathan Jaffe weren’t luckier either.
Because the event allowed re-buys, several players decided to fire two bullets. Some of these guys failed to advance both times. Scott Seiver for instance busted both times, while Jonathan Duhamel and David Sands actually managed to make something of their second buy-in. Duhamel finished with 109,600 chips to his name.
