2013 PCA Main Event – Day 1A Report

While the $100k Super High Roller stole most of the lime-light at the start of the PCA’s 2013 edition, the Main Event got rolling quietly in the background too, its first day 1 flight seeing a starting field of 320 players belly up to the tables. The $10k buy-in was obviously a cinch compared to the $100k buy-in featured by the Super High Roller, so the participation soared.
Interestingly enough though, contrary to the organizers’ expectations, the day 1A field was significantly smaller than that of the 2012 PCA Main Event, which drew 418 players. There was a Chinese poker tournament taking place in the same room, and quite a few of the “name” players were distracted by it, so things may in fact return to normal on Day 1B.

Many high profile professionals stuck to their guns though and played in the Main Event and many of them were quite successful indeed. Paul Volpe managed to not only survive the day, but he did so on a massive stack. Bolivar Palacios finished with a healthy stack as well. The two players will be joined on Day 2 by Chris Moorman, Sam Grafton, Ville Wahlbeck and PokerStars’ own Joe Cada.
Calvin Anderson was another player who had a massively successful Day 1B: he finished the day with a stack of 159k chips. Joseph Cheong on the other hand didn’t do so well. As a matter of fact, he busted out early, followed to the rail by Barry Greenstein, Lex Veldhuis, Faraz Jaka and Marcel Luske.
Given that the Super High Roller is scheduled to play down to a winner soon, Day 1B of the Main Event will probably have a host of “name” players in its initial lineup. Daniel Negreanu is expected to play, together with Phil Hellmuth and Jason Mercier.
