2013 WSOP – Dana Castaneda Wins Event #54

Dana Castaneda finished 94th in the Ladies $10k NL Holdem Championship event a few days ago and took down some money for her efforts. The success prompted her to buy into event #54, a $1k NL Holdem affair and what a great move it turned out to be. She walked away with the title and the $454.2k top prize, becoming the first woman to win an open WSOP event since Vanessa Selbst’s 2007 performance.
Day 3 of the tournament saw 14 players return to the tables and the eliminations began as soon as the action kicked off. Orjan Skommo was the first victim of the day. He was followed to the rail by Thomas Hall who was bounced by Michael Zucchet. Before they knew it, the field had played down to the final 9. Nicco Maag was the official final table bubble-boy.

The first victim of the final table was Kenneth Gregersen. Geregersen pushed his chips into the middle against start of the day chip leader Barry Hutter, and he lost the flip, hitting the rail in 9th place. Jason Bigelow then swung into action and he scored a spectacular double elimination, sending both Joseph Wertz and Jacob Bazeley to the sidelines. Bigelow held pocket rockets against the two players who both shoved all-in in front of him.
Hutter dropped a lot of chips through the day and he eventually bit the dust too, in 6th place. Castaneda was the one who sent him packing.

Philippe Clerc was the one who followed Hutter to the rail in 5th place. He was followed in turn by Michael Zucchet and Matthias Bednarek. Both players were sent to the rail by Castaneda, who thus started the heads-up stage with a massive chip lead.
In the beginning of the heads-up confrontation, Bigelow seemed to mount a comeback, but he eventually succumbed in 2nd place.
