2013 WSOP – Daniel Alaei Wins Event #61

The third day of event#61, the $10k PLO one of the
2013 WSOP, was supposed to see the field play down to a winner. Indeed, while that’s exactly what was supposed to happen, it nearly didn’t happen, because the heads-up stage of the event could’ve been drawn out into the 11th level, getting precariously close to being suspended on account of the
Main Event. Eventually however, with just 14 minutes remaining on the clock, poker pro Daniel Alaei managed to get the better of Jared Bleznick, taking down the title and the $852.6k top prize.
32 players returned to the tables at the beginning of day 3, and indeed it looked like having a 4th day added to the event was a real possibility. The Americans dominated the
poker tournament, despite the fact that no fewer than 12 countries were represented at the beginning of the day. By the time the 9-handed final table was reached though, only a Russian and an Irishman remained besides all the US players. Alex Kravchenko was then promptly sent to the rail in 9th place and Rory Rees Brennan bit the dust in 8th to leave only Americans to do battle for the title.
Sean Dempsey had a tough day from the beginning and he eventually busted in 7th. He was followed to the rail by Gjergj Sinishtaj and Numit Agrawal.
Tom Marchese was the next victim, sent packing after a small period of lull, and then James Wiese bit the dust in 3rd place to set up the heads-up stage of the tournament between the above said two pros.
With the two nearly even in chips, the heads-up stage promised to be a lengthy affair. Alaei then swooped in and took care of everything in a single hand, sending Bleznick packing and picking up the gold.
