2013 WSOP – Day 1A of Main Event Completed

The first day 1 flight of the 2013 WSOP Main Event went into the books earlier today. Day 1A saw a starting field of almost 1,000 players belly up to its tables. Only around 200 were eliminated through the day, the rest of them had their tickets punched for Day 2. The player who finished with the largest stack was Evan Panesis, who had 190.9k chips bagged.

Day 1A was definitely a pleasant surprise for the organizers as well as for the poker press. Traditionally the smallest and the least interesting of the Day 1 flights, this time around not only did Day 1A draw more players than expected, there were actually quite a few “name” pros in the starting field too. This included reigning Main Event Champion Greg Merson, who delivered the shuffle up and deal segment before kick-off too. Merson played well through the day and he finished with 81.6k chips, at the upper end of the survivor spectrum. Several other Main Event winners played on Day 1A too: Joe Cada was there, together with Pius Heinz. Other notables were Justin Bonomo, Ivan Demidov, Olivier Busquet and Elio Fox. While some of them did well, some of the high profile players found the going rather tough. Pius Heinz, the 2011 winner of the event was bounced on Day 1A. He had three sevens, but his opponent managed to catch a backdoor Broadway Straight for the upset.

Nobody was really keen to generate spectacle by shoving all-in, yet before the day was over, several spectacular situations developed. One was a 5-way all-in, which saw Mac Sohrabi walk away with the main pot. The other one was a 3-way all-in, at the end of which Brendan Flaherty was the all-smiles one. The survivors will do battle for a freshly unveiled bracelet, the worth of which is estimated at $500k.
