2013 WSOP – Event #14 – Day 1 in the Books

About half an hour ago, the first day of the $1.5k NL Holdem event (#14 of the 2013 WSOP) has gone into the books. A total of 1,819 players bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the action, looking to make it to Day 2. Such low buy-in events always attract massive starting fields and thus their Day 1s usually turn into massacres as players drop like flies by the 10s left and right. That was indeed the case this time around too: the end of the day only found 204 players with chips to their names.
The player who finished the day with the largest stack was Grant Curnow, who bagged 138k chips. Frank Kassela finished second, with 121.8k chips. No one else even came close to the 100k chip mark: third place man Maurice Hawkins only had 80.3k chips bagged.

Due to the high concentration of notables in the starting field, quite a number of them made it past the Day 1 hurdle: WSOP bracelet holder Nick Schulman was among them. He finished with 58.2k chips to his name, enough for 4th place.
Erick Lindgren finished within the top 10 as well, with 54.5k chips, as did Steve Zolotow, who ended up 7th, with 44.8k chips. Paul Wasicka and Dan Kelly made the top 10 as well.

The interesting thing about the Day 1 action was that field almost managed to reach the money-bubble. Only 5 places shy of the critical mile-stone, the tournament will probably kick off with a deep-freeze on Day 2, as players will attempt to weather the 5 eliminations with their starting stacks intact. One of the highlights of the day was the pot that Paul Wasicka took from Dan Kelly two and a half hours before the end of the day.
