WSOP Main Event hasn’t even gotten through all of its Day 1 flights yet, we can already proclaim this year’s Series that of the female poker player. Indeed, since 2007, Vanessa Selbst was the only woman who managed to take down a title in an open
WSOP event. Just last week however, Dana Castaneda broke the ice, winning a bracelet and now another lady added her name to the winner’s list: Loni Harwood won event #60, the $1.5k
NL Holdem one, taking home the gold and a first-place prize totaling $609k.
15 players returned to the tables at the beginning of the day, set on playing down all the way to a winner, the first objective however was the reaching of the final table.
It only took the field a level to play down to the final table. The first two victims were Yongjun Lu and Ryan Julius, who bit the dust in the same hand. High-profile poker pro Hiren Patel was the one responsible for their demise.
Jason Reynolds followed them to the rail, followed in turn by Ashwin Sarin and Maksim Tyurin. Cormac Ohiggins’ elimination in 10th place set up the final table.
The action ground to a halt at that stage as it took over an hour for the first victim of the final table to hit the rail. Hiren Patel was the ill-fated one, getting crippled by Harwood first and then losing his tournament life to Yongshuo Zheng. Bijon Notash followed him to the rail after another rather extended dry-spell eliminations-wise. Harwood got extremely lucky next, and she chipped up massively against Yngve Steen. That pot gave her a massive boost and she didn’t look back. She eliminated Cy Williams and then Daniel Cascado. The heads-up stage of the event saw Zheng square off against the eventual winner. Heads-up action lasted for about 2 hours.
