2013 WSOP Main Event – Day 1B is in the Books

The second Day 1 flight of the 2013 WSOP Main Event wrapped up today, and the going was yet again tough and spectacular. Day 1B truly eclipsed Day 1A in just about every respect: 1,942 players bellied up to the tables at the start of the action, filling up all three tournament rooms. Despite the impressive numbers posted by Day 1B, it still fell short of last year’s second day 1 flight which yielded a player turn-out of 2,114. With Day 1C still to come though, organizers are hoping the overall number of participants will exceed 6k in the end. Day 1C is generally considered the biggest of the day 1 flights, and it usually brings in more players than Day 1A and Day 1B combined.

Day 1B consisted of 5 two-hours levels, at the end of which Clement Tripodi emerged with the chip lead. 1,300 players advanced and Tripodi spearheaded them with a stack of 207.5k. That haul allowed Tripodi to take the overall chip lead away from Day 1A top finisher Evan Panesis. Daniel Cates stole the limelight on Day 1B, finishing with a monster stack of 198.4k. Robert Russ and Sorel Mizzi finished with healthy stacks as well. Cates was involved in the largest pot of the day, a 99.3k whooper, which he took off Danny Illingworth, after his Ad, 5d hit trips with an A kicker. Illingworth had trip 5s as well but his kicker was worse.

The starting field was rife with former WSOP Main Event champions: there were no fewer than 5 of them at the beginning of the day, but only 3 survived: Dan Harrington, Doyle Brunson and Chris Moneymaker. The two who were bounced were Scotty Nguyen and Greg Raymer. Scott Seiver, Eugene Katchalov, Max Lykov and Melanie Weisner on the other hand all advanced.
