2013 WSOP Main Event – Day 1C in the Books

The 3rd day 1 flight of the
2013 WSOP Main Event went into the books earlier today and it was indeed all the organizers expected it to be: having drawn a starting field of 3,467 players, it was indeed bigger than the first two day 1 flights combined. Day 1C thus set a new record: last year, the third day 1 flight saw 3,418 players belly up to the tables, setting a new record which was obviously beaten now. Day 1C settled the score as far as the overall Main Event numbers were concerned too: the overall starting field was 6,352 players large, generating a prize-pool of $59,708,800, which practically guarantees the eventual winner a $8.35 million haul.
Given the much larger size of the starting field and the increased pace of the action, Mark Kroon, who emerged with the Day 1C chip lead, claimed the overall chip lead as well: he finished with 246.3k chips. Like most of the players at the WSOP tables, Kroon isn’t a newcomer to the Series either: in 2001, he finished 399th in the Big Dance, claiming a $30.9k reward.
Although his lead is a rather impressive one indeed, it wasn’t until the very last hand of the night that Kroon’s presence at the top was established. In fact, Imari Love held the lead then, but Kroon took a massive pot off Ylon Schwartz on the very last hand to snatch the honors away.
Love finished with 2143k chips. Michael Mizrachi had a great Day 1C too: he spent most of his time hovering near the top of the pops, and eventually he finished with a very healthy stack of 176.1k chips. Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu advanced as well and so did Gus Hansen and Tom Dwan, who didn’t even show up to play (their stacks were blinded off but they still have some chips left).
