2013 WSOP Main Event – Day 3 in the Books

The third day of the 2013 WSOP Main Event marked the first time that the entire surviving field convened under the same roof to play down further toward the money. After 5 more levels of action, the money-bubble has been reeled in indeed: 666 players remained standing at the cessation of the green felt hostilities, and with the bubble set for 649th place, there aren’t many players left who will have to go home empty handed on Day 4.
Maxx Coleman was the player who finished the day with the largest stack. He had 1,071,500 chips bagged. Like most of those taking part in this year’s Series, Coleman is not a newcomer to poker in general and to the WSOP in particular either. In fact, he has several cash finishes to his name (one of them a WSOP one), albeit none of them particularly impressive. His only WSOP cash was a $3.38k one, in event #3 this year.

Even though Coleman finished at the top, the eyes and the attention of the press were focused elsewhere for the entire day. Two Main Event champions are still in contention: Doyle Brunson and Greg Merson. Merson is in fact the reigning champ, currently attempting a title defense (an achievement which would indeed be unprecedented in the history of the Series) and Brunson is …well…just the father of Texas Holdem and a living monument to the poker lifestyle.

Other “name” players saw action on Day 3 as well. Phil Ivey bit the dust during level 14 at the hands of Phil Mader. Annette Obrestad and Melanie Weisner on the other hand both advanced, with healthy stacks no less. Kyle Julius, Jamie Armstrong and Luke Schwartz will join them on Day 4. Christian Harder and Ronnie Bardah are still alive as well.
