2013 WSOP Main Event – How are the Notables Doing?

With all the Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 flights of the 2013 WSOP Main Event in the books, it is about time that we took a look back on how some of the most hyped “name” competitors have fared thus far. Obviously, as far as relevance goes, last year’s Octo-Niners were at the top of everyone’s list. After all, a successful WSOP Main Event title defense is quite unprecedented and it would indeed be sensational if Greg Merson could be the first one to pull off such a stunt. Although the odds of a successful title defense are indeed minimal, Merson is currently well underway towards that objective. He has survived all the hurdles thus far, together with poker legend Doyle Brunson and he is still in the running with a decent-sized stack to his name no less.
Runner-up Jesse Sylvia on the other hand is no longer in contention. He busted out during Day 1B, apparently as one of the early victims. He said he had had to deal with several bad beats and that he hadn’t played quite as well as he wanted to.
Jake Balsiger busted on Day 1A, while Andras Koroknai and Michael Esposito both bit the dust on Day 1C.
Jeremy Ausmus made it all the way to Day 3, while Russell Thomas, Steve Gee and Robert Salaburu are all still alive.

Team PokerStars has thus far fared pretty well, despite the fact that several of its most prominent members have been bounced already. Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Selbst and Jason Mercier are no longer in contention, but Marcel Luske, Bertrand Grospellier and Jake Cody are still holding down the fort.

Full Tilt’s professionals on the other hand have had a dismal showing. Blom didn’t bother showing up, while Hansen and Dwan have both been bounced on Day 2C.
