A Second Look at the 2013 WSOP November Nine – Part 11

Sitting in seat #9 at the
2013 WSOP’s November Nine showdown is Jay Farber, the wildcard of the final table. Unlike pretty much all the other final table participants, Farber is not a poker professional, nor does he have a solid poker reputation to bring to bear. The UC Santa Barbara business graduate is a casual player in the sense that poker is a hobby for him rather than a means to earn a living.
He only played in another
WSOP Main Event with the exception of this one, so it didn’t really take him a lot of tries to make it onto the top stage of the poker world. He’s never had a WSOP cash finish either, but the $733k he’s already guaranteed will probably turn him into one of the top WSOP earners regardless come November. He didn’t really amass an impressive poker resume in non-WSOP live poker events either: his only noteworthy cashes came in two 2010 Deep Stack Extravaganza events, in which he finished 12th- and 14th respectively, picking up a combined reward of $2.1k.
Farber said that he had moved to Las Vegas initially with the intent of becoming a poker pro. He got involved in other things though and before he knew it, he fell out of the game. He kept pushing it on a hobby level though and that decision paid huge dividends for him through this November Nine presence.
According to some of the experts, his low poker profile will definitely not be a liability for him, come November. In fact, it may turn out to be a major asset as his opponents won’t be able to study his game as well as he will be able to study theirs. He has a good position at the table too, which may in fact make him the underdog favorite of the November Nine.
