ANZPT Auckland – Day 1C Report

While the first two day 1 flights of the ANZPT’s Season 5 Auckland Main Event were quite disappointing attendance-wise, the last of the three day 1 flights, day 1C delivered: no fewer than 86 players took advantage of the final chance to buy into the event. With that, the final numbers for the poker tournament were set too: a total of 207 players bought in, creating a prize-pool of NZ$ 414k. What that means is that the winner will be the only one to take home a 6-figure prize: NZ$107.6k. The runner-up will only get NZ$ 68.3k.

The final day proved to be the right time to get going for several “name” players. David Gorr, PokerStars’ Bryan Huang and Simon Watt all got going on Day 1C. Of these guys, Watt failed to make the cut, dropping out on a rather painful bad beat too: he got his chips into the middle preflop against Stephen McKay. Watt had pocket rockets against McKay’s pocket Ks so it looked like he was going to double up, until another K hit the board on the river to give his opponent a set and to send him packing.

The player who finished the day with the biggest stack was Xia Dong Xia, who managed to amass 180.6k chips. Xia hadn’t really been near the top of the chip counts before going on a massive tear close to the end of the day. He took down two of the biggest pots of the poker tournament: one from McKay on a full-house vs better full-house match-up and one from another player. The two massive pots allowed Xia to open a massive lead over second-place woman Monica Eastick who finished the day with a stack of 137k chips.
Patrick Lui was the only other player with a 6-figure stack.
