ANZPT Perth – Day 1A Report

The 5th season of the PokerStars-sponsored ANZPT saw its Perth Main Event kick off on Wednesday. The first day 1 flight of the poker tournament saw 67 players belly up to the tables of the Crown Perth. The day consisted of 6 levels of action, at the end of which, Peter Woodworth emerged as the chip leader, behind a stack of 84k chips. He was followed by Dale Marsland, who finished with 70.6k chips to his name.
Despite its relatively low-profile nature, the event saw quite a few name players among its registrants. Unfortunately, Lady Luck wasn’t too kind to some of these players on Day 1A. Kristian Lunardi for instance was bounced early, together with Tom Grigg and Rupert Elder. While some of the name crowd suffered, others thrived. Dale Marsland shot into second place late in the day. Australian Poker HoF member Gary Benson did well through the day as well.
Local players Ricky Kroesen and Andrew Jeffreys finished among the front runners too. In fact, Jeffreys finished the day in 5th place, behind a healthy stack of 57.4k chips. Kroesen made the top 10 too: he finished 8th, with 55k chips to his name.

Brad Bower was among those who advanced to day 2 too. Bower had a great start to his day. He picked up pocket 3s during the early going and he managed to get an opponent to tag along after another 3 fell on the flop to give him a set. That pot almost doubled his stack.
Marsland made a risky call on a board of 6,2,J,5,A later in the day, holding pocket Qs. The player who pushed all-in had a K,J for a pair of jacks, so that turned out well for Marsland after all.
