APPT Cebu – Day 1A Report

The first day 1 flight of the APPT’s Cebu Main Event was a short affair as far as major
live poker tournaments go: it only consisted of 6 one-hour levels. At the end of the short but action-filled day, Ivan Zalac emerged with the chip lead. Zalac finished the day with a stack of 109.1k chips. Following him closely in second place was Khac Tran, who finished with 105.9k chips to his name. Only another player managed to cross the 100k chip mark, Sotirios Koutopas, who bagged 101.8k chips.
Tran’s run was the story of the day. A couple of weeks ago, he had taken down the APT’s Manila Main Event, a move which landed him a $124k prize. With all eyes on him at the beginning of the day, he acquitted himself of the responsibility well, finishing a close second and essentially setting himself up for yet another deep run.
Antoine Amourette’s presence in the top 10 was a welcome surprise as well. Amourette finished the last edition of the same event 9th, and this time around, he finished the day 7th, with a healthy stack of 69.6k chips to his name.
Sam Razavi was another “name” player who managed to survive the day. He finished with 42.2k chips. He will be joined on Day 2 by
PokerStars’ own Bryan Huang, who finished with 19.8k chips.
The beginning of the day saw a surprisingly large number of notables belly up the tables. Many of them didn’t make the cut obviously. Dan Kelly was among the fallen, together with Vincent Rubianes and David Borg. PokerStars’ Vivian Im, the winner of the last edition of the APPT Cebu Main Event, was among those eliminated too, which means there’s no chance left for a title defense.
