APPT Cebu – Day 2 report

Few things showcase the rising popularity of the game of poker in Asia better than the fact that no fewer than 238 players showed up for the two day one flights of the APPT’s Cebu Main Event. Of those players, only 127 were still around when day two kicked off at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa. The prize pool was a massive PHP 21,518,480 (that's about $490,000).
Players wasted no time at all a ripping into each other, and a whole bunch of them were gone by the time the tournament director called for a break so that the home crowd could watch Many Pacquaio’s fight.
Most of the
PokerStars pros fell victim to the early attrition. Only Joe and Tony Hachem stayed behind to represent the
online poker site.
Joe wouldn't hang around for long though. He got all his chips into the middle on a less than ideal starting hand and failed to get anything going. Tony showed more grit but he too was sent to the rail before the end of the day.
Kim Gap Young was the one who managed to clinch the chip lead at the end of the day 2 hostilities. Kim played aggressively and he had a roller coaster ride of a day before a huge pot taken off Tom Grigg secured the chip lead for him at the end of it all.
Only 35 players were still in contention when the action was called, and unfortunately for them, Van Marcus and James Honeybone were not among the survivors. They were in fact the last couple of casualties of day two.
One of the early chip leaders, Andrew Hinrichsen of Australia, finished second behind Kim. Mikael Rozen from Sweden amassed a more than decent stack too. Mike Puno was sole representative of the host nation in the top 10.
