APPT Macau – Day 1A report

Posted by: Mark Baldwing - Tue, 2010-05-18 16:01

88 players showed up for Day 1A of the PokerStars sponsored APPT’s Macau stop. That number may not seem like an impressive one through the prism of the quantity it denotes, but given the fact that 8 is the number of luck in the Chinese culture, its significance far extends layman observations. The Grand Lisboa played host to the first day 1 flight. By the end of the day, of the 88 initial registrants only 43 were left in contention. Andrew Chieng sat atop the leader board with a stack of 113k chips.
Chieng didn’t quite look like a chip-lead contender for most of the 7 levels of the day, but a late rush planted him firmly in the driver’s seat. The man controlling the early flow of the action was Valdimir Geshkenbein. He took down a huge pot during the 4th level of play. Responsible for Geskenbein’s chip up was Wing Bor Cheng, who donated most of his chips to him during the aforementioned hand.
The flop of 9s,8d,7s didn’t do a lot to either of the two players. The 2d got some action from Gheng, and the 10s on the river prompted Geshkenbein to shove it all-in. He then turned over Ks, 3s for the K-high flush and the win, taking his stack to 80k chips. He dropped about half that till the end of the day though, so he would not return to day 2 on a large stack.

PokerStars’ own Raymond Wu found himself stuck in a quagmire during the early stages of the poker tournament. The online poker site protégée had some tough competition at his table in Daren Yoon and Nathanael Seet. He did manage to get some traction towards the end of the day though, mostly at Geshkenbein’s expense. In a crucial hand between the two, Wu’s straight beat Geshkenbein’s top pair to give the PokerStars pro the pot and to bump his stack near the 90k mark. He eventually finished the day in third place, while Geskenbein sunk back into the field.
Celina Lin and Marcel Luske also survived the day, joining their PokerStars teammate on the starters’ list for Day 2.
Bryan Huang would not be among the Day 2 starters though. He started the day off on the wrong foot and never really managed to get anything going.
