APPT Melbourne – Day 1A Report

The first day 1 flight of the APPT’s Melbourne Main Event saw 98 players belly up to its tables. The first event of the APPT’s 6th season had thus got off to a great start. 7 levels of dog-eat-dog action were squeezed into the day, at the end of which 65 players were still standing. The player with the largest stack at the end of the day was Brendon Rubie, who had accumulated 103.5k chips.
Rubie is currently on something of a hot streak: he has thus far won an Aussie Millions side-event in 2012, following that up with a second place finish in a $2.5k NL Holdem Four-handed event at the WSOP.
There were quite a few ‘name’ players in the starting field at the beginning of the day. Oliver Speidel played, together with Liam O’Rourke and Benn Skender. Team
PokerStars Pro was represented by Raymond Wu and Roy Bhasin. Speidel was not among the 65 survivors at the end of the day and neither was David Allan who played as well.
One of the tables drew extra attention at the event: dubbed the ‘table of death’ it had Brendon Rubie playing at it, together with Tom Grigg, Jackie Glazier and Christian Lunardi. Glazier was the first one who paid the ultimate tournament price for this unfortunate table distribution. She busted out at the hands of Tom Grigg, after her pocket Js fell to the latter’s pocket Ks. All of the other pros at the ‘table of death’ managed to advance though, and Rubie – as said above - even managed to clinch the chip lead.
Ricky Kroesen survived the first Season 6 APPT hurdle as well, together with Julius Colman and Will Jones. Michael Kannan had an excellent day: when everything was said, done and accounted for, he found himself second in chips, right behind the leader. Will Jones finished 3rd. Tom Grigg eventually clinched 9th place.
