APPT Melbourne – Day 2 Report

Day 2 of the Pokerstars APPT’s Melbourne stop saw the field thinned further down and even though the money bubble was approached it wasn’t quite reached. 37 players survived the second day of action, and there are still 9 who will go home with nothing to show for their efforts.
Phillip Willcocks from New Zealand finished the day in the lead. He had amassed a stack of 770k chips. The New Zealander isn’t exactly a stranger to the top positions of high buy-in live poker tournaments: he finished in second place in the ANZPT Gold Coast Main Event in 2009, for a reward of $112k.
Thanks to the pro-heavy nature of the starting field, quite a few other ‘name’ players survived to battle it out on Day 3. James Obst was one of these guys. Known for his online antics, Obst managed to amass a stack of 452k, which is nowhere near as big as that of the chip leader, but which still gives him a healthy chance on Day 3.
Another player to return with a healthy stack on Day 3 is Koray Turker. He managed to build a 424k stack.
Norah Greer finished near the top of the chip counts as well, with a stack of 382k chips.
Keiran Harris, a member of Team
PokerStars Pro Online Australia, finished with 389k chips, setting himself up for a nice live tournament run on day 3.
Tony Hachem had survived the previous day on a decent stack, and although he once put his tournament life onto the line with the wrong hand on Day 2, he would survive with 161k chips. The hand that almost brought about his demise saw him shove all-in holding A,Q against Jonathan Karamalikis’ A,K. A Q fell on the board to give him a lease on his tournament life.
Michael Guzzardi, Leo Boxell, Van Marcus and start of the day chip leader Mitch Carle also survived.
