The
PokerStars APPT’s 2011 season moved to the Sky City Casino in Queensland, NZ for its second stop. No fewer than 3 day 1 flights are scheduled, the first of which only managed to draw a starting field of 40 players. The relative lack of player interest is quite understandable though: often dubbed the adventure sports capital of the world (or at least of the Southern Hemisphere), Queensland has plenty to offer besides poker, and it’s basically a lock that most of those who flew in for the APPT Main Event took some time out on Day 1A to sample some of the local attractions.
With so few combatants bellying up to the tables, the day turned out to be a rather short one: it lasted for 6 hours only.
For those who bit the dust, it proved to be an even shorter one: Ryan Hong, Aaron Bentley, Trung Tran and Joel Feldman were all among those who would get plenty of time to partake in the adventure sports activities the location is famous for.
The majority of those who got going on Day 1A were local players. Even though a total of 8 countries were represented in the starting field, the fact that they formed a solid majority meant that almost all the top spots of the end-of-the-day leader board would be taken up by New Zealanders. Semesa Brown was the only one who managed to break the local grip on the top positions: the Aussie squeezed into 3rd place.
Cole Swannack, the player who had finished third in the 2010 APPT Macau Main Event, finished with the largest stack. He was followed by Koray Turker and Jackson Zheng. The leader had amassed a stack of 86k chips. Turker finished with 85k and Zheng with 80k.
Werner Soames of the UK also made the top 10: he finished in 7th place with 34k chips. Harry Kyriacou of Australia and Joel Douaglin of New Caledonia rounded out the top 10.
