APPT Queenstown – Day 1C Report

The third day 1 flight of the
PokerStars APPT’s Queenstown Main Event was without a doubt quite a letdown for pundits. Everyone expected a massive starting field to show up, eclipsing those of the previous two day 1 flights. Instead, 43 players registered and only 36 showed up to actually play. The 7 who stayed away left plenty of dead money at the table, so those playing weren’t exactly complaining. Anyway, the relatively shallow starting field has translated into a relatively shallow prize-pool: the winner will take home a prize of NZD 94,300. Local players (New Zealanders and Australians) were once again dominating the ranks, and their domination was nowhere as obvious as in the end-of-the-day chip counts, where the top 10 only offered room to a single non-local: Roland Keiso of Estonia clinched 8th spot, having amassed a stack of 32k chips.
Six levels of play went down on Day 1C, after which 23 players remained. What that means is that a total of 71 players will belly up to the tables on Day 2 of the event.
There were plenty of ‘name’ players in the Day 1C starting field too. Some of them, like Joel Dodds and Andrew Scott won’t have to worry about drawing any Day 2 battle plans. Julian Cohen was amongst those who bit the dust too.
Coming off a nice APPT Melbourne Main Event run, Leo Boxell looked like he was going to turn in a repeat performance, but he eventually faded away late in the day, courtesy of the eventual chip leader, Alicia Sale.
Sale had a rough start to her Day 1C, but she recovered nicely and kept chipping up through the remainder of the day. She finished with a stack of 91k chips, which gave her the overall lead over Cole Swannack (86k) and Koray Turker (85k).
Ben Paurini of New Zealand finished second on Day 1C, with a stack of 77k. Octavian Voegele finished 3rd with 59k.
