71 players returned to action on day 2 of the
PokerStars APPT’s Queenstown Main Event, marking the largest single-day starting field of the event thus far. The day consisted of 6 levels of action. 21 players survived to return on day 3, as exactly 50 of the hopefuls were forced to hit the rail. Around the halfway mark (after 3 levels) 20 players had already been turned into mere spectators. Among those who bit the dust on Day 2 were PokerStars’ Dale Philip, Ben McLean and Ricky Kroesen.
Even though the event was dominated through and through by new Zealanders and Aussies, the player who managed the clinch the chip lead at the end of the day was a German.
Marcel Schreiner was one of the Day 1 chip leaders. He wielded his large stack skillfully and even though Lady Luck didn’t quite side with him in the beginning, eventually he managed to work his way into her graces and he finished with 453k chips, by far the most of any player in the event. Just to put the size of Schreiner’s lead into perspective: the player who finished second, Tom Grigg of Australia, bagged only 220k.
Grigg had put in an excellent effort on day 2: the online poker player dominated the competition and he appeared slated to finish the day as the leader, but he then dropped a massive pot to Schreiner on one of the last hands of the day.
The two players got into a raising war on a board of K,4,5,6,7. None of them had the goods though and Grigg decided to attempt a massive bluff on the river. Schreiner made the call holding A,Q. Grigg had A,9 for the even weaker hand and the pot was shipped the German’s way.
Jonathan Karamalikis of Australia survived the day too: he finished third, on a stack of 192k.
Andrew Hinrichsen and Jackson Zheng were among the survivors as well.
