APPT Queenstown – Marcel Schreiner Takes Title

After 4 days of action, the PokerStars APPT’s Queenstown Main Event has finally wrapped up with Marcel Schreiner’s victory. The German has led the field chips-wise for the last 3 days of the event, so in that respect, it’s fair to say he deserved to win.
A final table of nine reconvened on the last day of action to play down to a winner. It took them almost 12 hours to reach the final hand of the tournament. The final table was loaded with talent: several ‘name’ players were present, among them Jonathan Karamalikis and Tom Grigg.

None of these guys managed to get within arm’s length of the heads-up stage though: Karamalikis became the first victim of the final table and he had to settle for 9th place, taking home only NZD $10.2k.
Tom Grigg faired a bit better, though he faded away in 6th place too. He took home NZD $19.7k for his efforts.
The heads-up stage of the event saw Yates and Schreiner tear into each-other. Schreiner had used the advantages provided by his large stack well through the day. Even though he took down the majority of large pots, when it came to heads-up play, Yates had a stack similar in size to Schreiner’s. It took Schreiner two hours to impose his will at the table. Eventually, the whole heads-up stage took 180 grueling hands.

After Schreiner had painstakingly built up a chip lead, Yates rebounded in a spectacular manner, taking down a huge pot and grabbing the lead. Schreiner wasn’t about to go down quietly though. He ground his way back into the lead yet again, and finally, he managed to get Yates all-in, holding a dominating A,Q against his A,9. Two aces fell on the flop, as well as a Q which gave Schreiner a full house and locked up the title for him.
Schreiner took home NZD $94.3k for his efforts.
