Aussie Millions – Sam Trickett wins $100k Challenge

After a marathon of side events and various newly introduced tournament structure trials, the 2011 Aussie Millions has finally reached the stage of the Main Event. Day 1a got going with much fanfare. The person to call the traditional “Shuffle up and deal!” was none other than local player and PokerStars pro Joe Hachem. The $100k Challenge came to a conclusion on the same day: Sam Tricket took the title in that one, walking away with the gold ring and the AUD$1,525,000 top prize.
Trickett was the one who started the final table with the largest stack of chips, and even though the ride was anything but smooth for him, he managed to prevail in the end.
He started off well, but ended up dropping chips and at one point he found himself among the short stacks. He fought back though and by the time Erik Seidel was eliminated in 3rd, he was back on top.
Tony Bloom, his heads-up adversary soon took over, but Trickett bounced back yet again, this time with Lady Luck’s full support when he made runner-runner straights in two consecutive hands.
From that point on, it was all downhill for Bloom. He got the last of his chips into the middle holding Qd, 9d and got a call from Trickett with A,Ko. The board brought a bunch of bricks and Trickett won the event by virtue of his high card.
Bloom picked up almost AUD$1 million for his efforts.

238 players bellied up to the tables of the Main Event on the first day 1 flight, among them “name” pros like Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren and Patrick Antonius. 79 players made it past the first hurdle. Erick Lindgren held the largest stack at the end of the day. Patrik Antonius did well too, together with Ivey and Erik Cajelais.

Tony Dunst, Maria Ho and Eli Elezra were eliminated though.
