Full Tilt Poker’s Carlos Mortensen followed through on his excellent WPT Hollywood Poker Open run with a win the other day, his third WPT one overall, thus etching his name deeper into WPT history. He is now tied with Gus Hansen for the most WPT titles, and he surpassed Daniel Negreanu as far as the amount of money made in various WPT events is concerned.
This latest $393,820 addition, took Mortensen’s all-time WPT winnings to $5.6 million.
The
poker tournament held in Indiana, at the Hollywood Casino, attracted only 144 registrants. That meant the prize-pool would stay relatively small, but it also meant that the field would be made up almost exclusively of high profile professionals. The organizers had planned to let the field play down to the money bubble on day 3, but it eventually took about 4 more hours of play on Day 4 for the landmark point in the poker tournament to be reached. Dwyte Pilgrim, Shawn Buchanan and Gevork Kasabyan were all eliminated short of the money.
Because it took so long for the bubble to burst, the blinds have caught up with many of the survivors. Following the bubble, the field was quick to whittle down to the final table. Todd Terry busted out in 7th place, to set the official 6-handed final table, picking up $72,349 for his efforts. By that stage, Mortensen had already emerged as the favorite, starting the final table with the largest stack.
Jerry Pain had only about 13 BBs though, so he was forced to make a move or watch his remaining chips fall prey to the blinds. His do or die move backfired, and he was bounced in 6th. Ravi Raghavan followed him in 5th place and it didn’t take long for Chris Bell to bite the dust too.
Three handed play raged on for a while, until Frank Calo’s two pair succumbed to Mortensen’s set of 3s for the bust.
Full Tilt Poker Pro Mortensen then took on Mike Mustafa heads-up. The battle see-sawed for a while. Mortensen took the chip lead only to see Mustafa bounce back. Eventually, the chips went into the middle on a flop of 10,9,6, with Mustafa holding 10,9 for the two pair and Mortensen having 8,7 for the straight. That hand left Mustafa with only 3 BBs and he succumbed soon on a 6,6 vs K,10 coin-flip match-up.
