Council Bluffs Horseshoe Poker Classic – Richard Thousand Wins Main Event

Although the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open and its various high prize-pool tournaments stole all the headlines last week, another major live poker event was unfolding in Council Bluffs, Iowa: the Horseshoe Poker Classic, which featured 5 events and although its prize-pools weren’t exactly on the same level as those of the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open, its Main Event did feature a $1k buy-in and it did have 126 players belly up to its tables, a notable step forward from last year, when only 97 players coughed up the buy-in despite the fact that it was only $900 then.
The 30% increase in player attendance was even more impressive in light of the fact that the 5-event Series overlapped with the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open, the higher guarantees of which lured quite a number of players away from Council Bluffs.

Some “name” professionals did show up for the event though. Phil Mader for instance, who made it all the way to 43rd place in this year’s WSOP Main Event, played, together with a bunch of other – less known – players.
The winner emerged at the end of two days of action. Local player Richard Thousand walked away with the top prize of $30.7k. He defeated Thomas Lutjens heads-up for the title. Daniel Jensen and Darin Miller finished 3rd and 4th respectively.
The Main Event awarded by far the biggest prize to its winner. The winner of event #1 for instance, Steven Baker, walked away with $10.5k. Event #2 saw a massive deal at the top involving 7 players, leaving the eventual winner with just $1.6k to show for his efforts. Event #4 was the second biggest one of the Series. The winner, Sean Johnson, pocketed a little over $11k for his win after a heads-up deal.
Play at PokerStars and qualify for a large variety of live events, some of them as big as the WSOP Main Event, others more of the garden-variety.
