Durrrr Challenge 2.0 – Dwan falls further behind

Apparently Tom Dwan and Daniel “jungleman12” Cates are not about to let their challenge series go down the same path the Patrik Antonius series have taken. They reconvened for their second challenge session at Full Tilt Poker last Monday, not long after they’d logged their initial one. They only played 958 hands this time around though, and Cates yet again managed to come out on top. He logged a $172,954 profit to extend his overall lead to $692,400. The good news for Cates was that he did indeed appear dominant at the start of the new challenge series. The bad news is, it is statistically impossible for him to keep up this pace.

Dwan was the one who took down the largest pot of the session. Had he not pocketed that monster, his situation would’ve been much more dire.
Dwan was the one who opened the preflop betting in the said hand, holding pocket 10s. He was the aggressor on the K,8,3 rainbow flop too, but Cates stuck around. The 10h fell on the turn and Dwan’s set was complete. Cates chose to stay in the hand, calling all of Dwan’s raises and raising his post-river bet. Eventually, both players shoved all-in. Cates mucked his hand so we won’t ever know what he had committed that much money on. The monster weighed in at $131,588.

Dwan was actually hanging with Cates during the early parts of the session. By the 820th hand, he had a $25k lead, but things suddenly turned southward for him. He lost two six-figure pots in quick succession, a $122,377 one and a $115,173 one. That pretty much killed the fight in him and he called it the day soon after.
The question at this point in the series is whether Cates can maintain his dominant ways, or whether it’s a mere swing we’re seeing.
