Durrrr Challenge – Antonius turns the tide

Yes indeed, Patrik Antonius has actually managed to finally turn things around a little by logging a winning session. It wasn’t a landslide of a turn-around, but its psychological value probably far outweighs its real one. After having dropped 11 straight sessions to Dwan, Antonius finally bounced back with a $60,606 profit at the end of an eight and a half hour long session the other day.
Antonius has pretty much put the Challenge on hold while trying to recover the losses he’d incurred in the last couple of months at Full Tilt Poker. The fact that the Challenge got rolling again after a 46 day hiatus, can probably be attributed to Antonius’ cash game stack starting to show signs of recovery.
At the end of this online poker session, Dwan was still up a massive $1,847,105 overall, despite the loss.

The session consisted of 2,677 hands, spread out over 8.5 hours. The scene was set at the $200/$400 PLO tables. Antonius came out swinging, looking to make up for his huge series deficit, so monster pots began falling left and right from the get go. There were 4 pots in the session which shot past the $200k mark, the largest one of them landing on Dwan’s side of the virtual poker table.
The $273,392 monster came about in a hand in which Antonius held a $529k stack and Dwan a $137k one. The preflop action consisted of the customary three bet, called by Dwan. Antonius was the one who kicked off the action on the Jd, 7d, 3h flop, and Dwan raised it, in response to which, the Finn just shoved it all-in. Dwan made the call again and tabled Kh,Qh,Qd,5d. Antonius had Q,7,7,2 for the set. The Turn brought a J which gave Dwan a full house, and the 3 on the river preserved his advantage, giving him the pot.

The second largest pot of the session, weighing in at $248,798 landed in Antonius’ pockets. This time, Antonius was the one who hit a boat on the turn, to beat Dwan’s straight draw, which failed to materialize anyway.
The online poker challenge is currently about 72% done. Of the 50,000 hands set as target initially, only 14,020 hands remain, which means that Antonius’ chances for making a comeback look slimmer and slimmer with every session. One can never exclude the possibility of a huge turn-around though.
