EPT Barcelona - day 1A report

The PokerStars EPT is back in the house, this time with one of its most popular stops, the Barcelona one. A massive starting field of 264 players showed up at the Casino Barcelona for the first day one flight of the
EPT's main event. Each and every one of the registrants coughed up the buy-in with one clear goal in mind: returning to the same location on day two, to continue the battle for the title. Unfortunately, for about half of them the dream would end before night. Only 137 survived and had their chips bagged for day 2. The rest of the competitors hit the rail in a hail of bad beats, suck outs and nasty coolers.
One of the nastiest coolers of the day was the one suffered by Team PokerStars Sportsstar Fatima Moreira DeMelo. During one of the early hands, she locked horns with Team PokerStars Pro Alexandre Gomes. Moreira got her money into the middle holding a boat on the turn and things were looking great for her. All Gomes had was a single out to hit straight flush, which is exactly what he did.
Darius Suharto didn't fare particularly well either. He took some early hits, the biggest one of which saw his pocket kings cracked by an opponent’s pocket queens on the flop. It didn't take long after that for him to bite the dust.
As the blinds increased and the action became more interesting, several of the big names from Team
PokerStars took full advantage of the situation. Others succumbed to the pressure. This was the stage of action which claimed the tournament lives of Lex Veldhuis and Martin Horecki. Carter Phillips found the rail as well.
The end of the day chip lead was clinched by Loic Sa who managed to amass a stack of 217,700 chips.
