EPT Barcelona – Day 1A Report

Saturday saw the starting field of the first day 1 flight of the
EPT Barcelona Main Event belly up to the tables of the Gran Casino. The 346 players put in 9 levels of play, at the end of which the field was down to around 200 survivors. Martin Schleich had the best day of all participants, bagging a stack of 182.1k chips when the hostilities ceased, clinching the chip leader title.
The field was by no means an easy one. Several of Team
PokerStars’ pros were playing: Sandra Naujoks, Lex Veldhuis, Johnny Lodden and Martin Hruby were all there. Unfortunately for this highly distinguished contingent though, not a single one of them managed to survive to day 2.
They were joined on the rail by Ana Marquez, one of Team PokerStars Pro’s newest members.
Marquez fell at the hands of Erik Van Den Berg. The chips went into the middle on a flop of Jh,10c,9h. Marquez had a Kh,10h for the flush draw and the middle pair, while Den Berg had pocket Js for the flopped set. The 9s on the turn counterfeited Marquez’s remaining outs and the PokerStars pro was eliminated. The Qh on the river did give Marquez the flush, but by then it was way too late.
Ville Wahlbeck was one of the pros who thrived on Day 1A. Vanessa Selbst and Andre Akkari played well too.
Selbst picked up a whole bunch of chips from Domantas Klimciauskas, when her A,Q bested the latter’s pocket Ks on the flop. She then took another big pot off Martial Blangenwitch. Leo Margets managed to survive the day too. Chris Moorman and Ivan Freitez made it past the hurdle too.
The second Day 1 flight of the Main Event will kick off on Sunday. Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Eugene Katchalov and Phil Collins are all expected to play.
