EPT Barcelona – day 1b report

A truly impressive number of 495 players showed up for the second day one flight of the
EPT Barcelona main event. To give you an idea why this number was indeed impressive: last year, a total of 428 players registered for the event. The day 1b turnout took the total number of registrants to 758 this year. The spectacular increase in player numbers was no doubt due to the reduced buy-in, but even so, organizers hadn’t expected such great player interest.
With huge starting fields come huge prize pools, and this one will certainly not disappoint. A €3,790,000 whooper, it guarantees a payout of €825,000 for the winner and pays no fewer than 112 finishers.
Name pros were present in large numbers. Pretty much every table had one or two notorious names playing.
Daniel Negreanu was among these players, however, he never really managed to get anything going. He struggled along for a while but eventually after a rather insignificant run, he slammed his flush draw into Jan Collado’s two pair and he headed to the rail.
Luca Pagano, John Duthie, Allan Baekke, Nacho Barbero and William Thorson failed to make it past the day too.
Luis Rufas, one of the local players, managed to clinch the chip lead, having amassed a stack of 232,100 chips.
Rufas took control on level 5, and he never really sunk back into the field. Given the fact that the chip leader from previous day one flight, Loic Sa, finished on a smaller stack, Rufas will be the one going into day two as the overall chip leader.
Team
PokerStars Pro was represented at the top of the leaderboard by Leo Fernandez from Argentina. Nobody with the exception of the two cheap leaders, Sa and Rufas, managed to break the 200,000 chip mark.
A total of 399 players will belly up to the tables at the start of day two.
