EPT Barcelona Main Event – Day 1A Report

The first day 1 flight of the first EPT Main Event of season 9 kicked off with 403 players bellying up to the tables. More players are obviously expected to join the fray on Day 1B, which means that organizers are secretly hoping to take the field past the 1k mark.
226 players survived the first day of action. Aku Joentausta emerged with the chip lead at the end of it, having built a stack of 236k chips. Team PokerStars Pro enjoyed a healthy representation on Day 1A: there were no fewer than 10
PokerStars players among the registrants, and 7 of them managed to survive to Day 2. Two of the pros who were eliminated were Liv Boeree and Martin Hruby. Interestingly enough, they both fell after their big slicks were bested by their opponents’ pocket rockets and pocket Qs respectively.
The other PokerStars pro to fall on Day 1A was Arnaud Mattern, who busted out during the very first level at the end of a massive failed bluff.
Other pros had a much better day though: Lex Velduis for instance did so well that he became the first player to sail past the 100k chip mark. He eventually finished with a very healthy stack of 148.8k chips. Marcin Horecki survived the day too, though he found the going much tougher. He kept chipping up and then melting right back into the field. Eventually he finished with 14.2k chips.
Pius Heinz on the other hand managed to catch an early chip-up. From there on out, the going proved to be tougher for him though. Despite some problems he did finish strong, with 72.4k chips to his name.
Sebastian Ruthenberg finished the day on a similarly healthy stack as well.
Two previous EPT Barcelona champions survived the day too. Martin Schleich and Kent Lunmark will both return to the tables on Day 2. Sorel Mizzi was eliminated, together with Michael Tureniec and Benny Spindler.
